Arena Tournament Thoughts

I and two of my friends dove into the Arena Tournament the other day. Do I think I can win it all? No, not really. It’s mostly just a fun thing. I’ve set a optimistic goal of getting the Vanquisher title, but I kind of doubt that’s going to happen either. Armored Murloc, here I come!

My first character on the tournament realm was an Unholy Death Knight named Calduin. I went with the 21/0/50 spec. The other two guys were also an Unholy DK (same spec) and a Holy Paladin. I think the main reason we chose to go with 2DKs & a Pally were because the two DKs actually had level 80 DKs on live and the Pally actually had a Pally on live.

The first day, it didn’t go so well. We were pretty far under .500. I’ll take some of the blame, even though there was plenty to go around. My DK had not been into a single battleground, much less arena. He is Unholy DPS spec, which is very different from Unholy PVP spec. So I just chalked it up to all of us playing offspecs.

I logged in the next day and the other DK told me he and the Pally had talked and thought I should go Fury Warrior, since I have a level 80 warrior on live and that would give us a healing debuff. I’m cool with going warrior, but I decided to go with Arms, since that’s what I’m used to. I went with a 60/11/0 spec, and Randul the Dwarf on the Tournament Realm was born. I’m not sure that so much Arms is a good idea, but I like the bleed playstyle.

We ended up going 9 and 8 for the day, so we got above .500.  That’s an improvement I can appreciate.  We are all still tweaking our gear and playstyles, but an improvement is better than staying the same or going backwards.

Today, I decided to do a little research.  I am seeing a LOT of Pally/Hunter/Something comps near the top of the rankings.  A lot of those Somethings happen to be Death Knights.  Well, I have a Hunter sitting at 70 on live, so I’ve at least played a Hunter before.  I’m thinking about making a Hunter as my third character.  I want to go with a 0/14/57 build, but I’m not sure.  I’ve never played Survival before, so I am hoping I can make the transition.

I’m sure we’ll be playing our arena guys over the weekend, as well as doing Obsidian Sanctum and VoA if we have it tonight and hoping for a full clear of Naxx over the course of Saturday and Sunday.

Death Knight Keybinds

Yesterday I posted the keybinds I use on Randul, the Protection Warrior.  Today I am going to post my Death Knight Kered’s keybinds.

To re-emphasize, I bind most of my keys within reach of my left hand when resting on the home row.  (asdf) I am currently Unholy, so some of my keys will reflect that.

I recently took my wife’s Priest out for a spin and it showed me just how much I rely on my keybinds.  I didn’t have the Muscle Memory to use the keybinds she had set up so I was forced to hunt & click to use her skills.

Granted, having never played her character before I didn’t even know where her skills were on the bar half the time, but it still showed me how important using convenient keybinds is to my playstyle.

So to give you, my dear reader, some insight into how my fights typically go, I’ve decided to post my keybinds for the world to see.

My binds look like this in Defensive stance, where I live now.

These have pretty much been here since the beginning
1 – Autoattack (same on all stances)
2 – Heroic Strike (same on allstances)
3 – Rend (I know) (same in battle, whirlwind in zerker)
4 – Mouseover Sunder Armor Macro (regular sunder on other stances)
5 – Shield Bash (Every one of my characters has 5 as some sort of interrupt, this is pummel in zerker)
6 – Revenge (Overpower in battle, Victory Rush in zerker)

v – Devastate
b – Shield Block
c – Spell Reflect

I tend to put each classes major abilities on g and v because they seem to be the easiest keys for me to spam.

My critiques of myself would be that shockwave (ctrl x) is not too convenient (I miss sometimes), but x is execute so I’m not sure where to put it.

Victory rush should be the same button regardless of stance, but I’m still working on that.

Shield Wall is fine because of how rarely it is used, but zerker rage, bloodrage, Intimidating Shout, Challenging Shout & Commanding Shout usually require me to either use my right hand or click, which I don’t love.

I have a crapton of keybinds. My wife would freak if she saw this.  She uses her numbers and alt/numbers and clicks the rest.

I managed to snag these beauties on a Heroic Violet Hold run.  I was pretty thrilled, as they replaced the Daunting Legplates I was wearing.  I’m starting to see what happens as a warrior tank gets epic’d out.  My defense is plummeting.  I believe I’m at 542 at the moment.  I would check, but I logged out in DPS gear and I’m at work.

Since my Raid Leader and his woman are going out of town this weekend, it looks like I’m going to have the opportunity to hit up some Heroics in search of purplez.

I have two pieces of gear in my sights.

The Ancient Aligned Girdle will replace my lowest level item, the blue Tempered Saronite Belt.  The girdle drops off of Anub’arak in Heroic Azjol-Nerub.  I’ll be taking a hit in the Defense department, but if all else fails I can socket it with a defense gem using the Eternal Belt Buckle.  I LOVE Blacksmithing.

The other piece I’m shooting for are the Bracers of the Herald.  They drop off of Herald Volazj in Ahn’kahet: The Old Kingdom.  If I can get these, that should help with any Defense lost arming the Ancient Aligned Girdle, since they have more defense than Svala’s Bloodied Shackles, which I am using now.

On a side note, I am super stoked about Dual-Specs.  Since I’m pretty much trapped in my tanking position (a trap I’m perfectly happy with), I’ll probably be going Prot Tank/Arms PVP.  I love pvp, I just hate paying to respec.  This is going to make me happy.

Oculus is Pretty Terrible

I’ve run Regular Oculus a couple times in the last few days and I really have to say, it’s an incredibly awful instance.

Vehicles are horrible.  I know Blizzard has this thing for vehicle combat and more are coming in Ulduar, but seriously…Vehicles are horrible!

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Blizzard, stop with the vehicles already!  I want to play my character, not use some dragon’s stupid abilities.  A complete moron could fly up to a dragon and hit 1 repeatedly until the dragon is dead.  Oh wait, you hit time stop from time to time to get REALLY good damage!

Yeah, no thanks.

I’m going to create a poll, and I really hope both of you will answer it.  Vehicles…yay or nay?

The Scourge to Hold Death Knight Event

Omenscourge over at The Scourge is planning a Death Knight event on the Nazjatar server.  He is hoping to get a 30-40 Death Knight raid together in order to hold a few activities.

First, he plans to play a game of death grip hot potato with the Mayor of Southshore.  Secondly, he wants to raid hogger in an interesting way.  Lastly, he wants to see who can get closest to the King of Ironforge before they bite the big one.

Icebane Chestguard, Ghetto Tanking Piece

Today’s lesson, how to turn a situational chestpiece into a pretty solid tanking chest.

To review, I am currently rolling with the level 80 blue Reanimated Armor, which drops off of Gortok Palehoof in regular Utgarde Pinnacle.  This is a pretty decent tanking chest if you haven’t got anything from Heroics or Raids.  It served me just fine  in OS, VoA, & Nax10.  The enchant I was using on this piece was the +18 stam Heavy Borean Armor Kit.

Now on to the lesson.

Step 1:  Create through Blacksmithing or purchase from a Blacksmith, the Icebane Chestguard.

Step 2:  Create through Jewelcrafting or purchase from a Jewelcrafter, a Regal Twilight Opal, Vivid Forest Emerald and a Solid Sky Saphire.

Step 3:  Create through Enchanting or purchase from an Enchanter Enchant Chest – Greater Defense.

Step 4:  Wear pimped out Icebane Chestguard.

Let’s break down the stats for those who love that sort of thing.

Reanimated Armor

  • 26,141 Hit Points
  • 22,770 Armor
  • 549 Defense
  • 19.56% Dodge
  • 17.05% Parry
  • 15.96% Block Chance
  • 884 Block Value
  • 2,279 Attack Power
  • 161 Hit Rating
Icebane Chestguard

  • 27,261 Hit Points
  • 23,000 Armor
  • 544 Defense
  • 19.57% Dodge
  • 16.16% Parry
  • 15.76% Block Chance

With the Icebane Chestguard I net:

  • 1,120 Additional Hit Points
  • 230 Additional Armor
  • 5 Less Defense (still Crit Immune)
  • .01% Additional Dodge
  • .89% Less Parry
  • .20% Less Block Chance
  • 48 Less Block Value
  • 142 Less Attack Power
  • 8 Additional Hit Rating
  • Let’s not forget the 115 Additional Frost Resistance.

Overall, I’d call it an upgrade.
