Edge of Ruin vs Marrowstrike…really?

Administrative Note:  I wanted to get on a schedule of Monday, Wednesday & Friday posts, but I was sick yesterday and therefore no post.  I will try to get one out tomorrow and stick to that schedule.

I was looking into terms people searched to get to my site, and was shocked to see that people are STILL debating which is better…Edge of Ruin or Marrowstrike.  While that debate was interesting in it’s time, it is no longer relevant and I’m going to answer the question here and now.

For DPS

Neither.  Tyrannical Beheader is the way to go.  Yes, it’s a harder instance and yes it’s still Heroic, but if you really want to farm something once every day, farm Heroic Pit of Saron for this weapon.

That’s the easy perfect scenario answer.  This world is rarely a world of perfect scenarios however, so the best answer I can give is, go with what you have.

If you happen to get Heroic ToC and Edge or Marrowstrike drops, roll on it.  (Unless you are a Fury Warrior, in which case do not roll on Marrowstrike.)  If you have Edge of Marrowstrike drops…roll if you aren’t rolling against a Hunter or Druid.  If you want to be nice that is, if you just want the lewtz go for it.

Having said all of that, there is a weapon that is extremely farmable that is comparable to both of these weapons.  Garfrost’s Two-Ton Hammer.  It drops out of NORMAL Pit of Saron and is the same iLevel as Edge and Marrowstrike.   It lacks the Armor Pen of those weapons, but it can have more STR when gemmed properly and is slower, therefore it hits harder.

For Tanking

Now we get into the shady area of Death Knight tanking.  Of the four weapons I’ve mentioned so far, Edge of Ruin and Garfrost’s are out.  Edge really lacks the Stamina and has no gemming option to fix what it lacks.  Garfrost’s has a gem socket, but has lower Stamina than Marrowstrike and lacks all the delicious goodness that Marrowstrike’s agilitly offers.

So that brings us to Marrowstrike & Tyrannical Beheader.  This is one of those gray areas where you have to decide what is more important to you, Stamina or Armor/Avoidance.

Tyrannical Beheader offers more Stamina (when gemmed properly) than Marrowstrike.  36 more Stamina to be exact.  However, Marrowstrike offers a whopping 106 Agility which provides Armor and Dodge.  (I don’t have specific numbers as to how much Armor/Dodge the 106 Agility has at the moment)

Most people would probably go with the Tyrannical Beheader’s Stamina.  Personally, I am using Marrowstrike and TB is sitting in my pack.  More because TB is ungemmed than any actual preference.  I will say this, however, in a primarily magic-based fight, TB will be stronger than Marrowstrike hands down.  In a physical fight, it is really going to depend on your character.

So, I was tagged by That is Amazing (WoW)! to do this DPS Q&A thing.  I’m going to do it.  I’m not going to tag anyone else because…to be quite frank, all of the people in what I consider my “circle of blogs” have already done it or been tagged.

What is the name, class, and spec of your primary dps?

Kered, Death Knight, Dual-Wield Frost

What is your primary dpsing environment? (i.e. raids, pvp, 5 mans)

Mostly 5-mans, but I get to throw him in on the occasional alt 10-man run from time to time.

What is your favorite dps spell/ability for your class and why?

Howling Blast…when Rime and Killing Machine both light up at the same time, I love hitting that Howling Blast button and seeing the free auto-crit…especially in an aoe situation.

What dps spell do you use least for your class and why?

I’m going to go with a talent that is in the tree I use, but I haven’t specced into.  Hungering Cold.  It’s primarily a pvp talent and I don’t currently pvp with Kered.

What do you feel is the biggest strength of your dps class and why?

I can put out some prime-time aoe when I want to.  The why is pretty self explanatory.

What do you feel is the biggest weakness of your dps class and why?

Threat.  My current spec doesn’t have the threat reduction talent, so I pretty much always have to be aware of how much threat I’m putting out.

In a 25 man raiding environment, what do you feel, in general, is the best dps assignment for you?

Blowing stuff up.  If there is interrupting to be done, I can excel at that as well.

What dps class do you enjoy dpsing with most and why?

There are other dps classes?  I wasn’t aware.  I suppose it would be anyone that buffs me nicely, so pallies & shaman are nice.

What tanking class do you enjoy dpsing with least and why?

I don’t think the class really matters, it’s the players that suck.  I’ve had overgeared pallies not able to maintain threat while undergeared pallies did fine.  Same with every other tanking class.

What is your worst habit as a dps?

Probably tunnel vision.

What is your biggest pet peeve in a group environment while dpsing?

Bad tanks.  Being a good tank, bad ones drive me crazy.

Do you feel that your class/spec is well balanced with other dps?

If, by balanced you mean I am usually outdpsing everyone else that has similar gear levels, then yes…we are quite balanced.

What tools do you use to evaluate your own performance as a damage dealer?

Recount and boss death frequency.  If the boss dies, I’m doing fine.

What do you think is the biggest misconception people have about your class?

They are ezmode.  Yes, Death Knights are easy to play.  No, Death Knights are not easy to play at a high level.

What do you feel is the most difficult thing for new dpsers of your class to learn?

I suppose gearing issues, but I dunno really.  It’s hard for someone who actually takes the time to research and learn about a class to understand those who don’t.

What dps class do you feel you understand least?

Warlocks, they are the only class I’ve never played.  Not even at level 1.

What add-ons or macros do you use, if any, to aid you in dps?

Power Auras is probably the best addon for any class with procs.  Omen helps me not die.  Recount helps me judge my performance.  OmniCC gives me a nifty little counter on my buttons to let me know when my Cooldown is up, that’s helpful.  DeadlyBossMods is essential for anyone raiding, dps or not.

Strength over other stats or balanced stat allocation, and why?

Hit to 8% then STR, STR, STR and more STR.

 

Marrowstrike Explanation

I realize that my post declaring Marrowstrike superior to Edge of Ruin was a little crazy.  However, when you look at the big picture, along with an additional stat on Marrowstrike, things start to make sense.

The whole thing took me by surprise as well. I can tell you how I tweaked the spreadsheet which hasn’t updated for 3.2 yet to get the numbers.

I took my current gear, which I pulled from the Armory.

I plugged in Stormedge to get the 5% additional crit & crit damage from Poleaxe spec.

After that, I just edited the stats to fit Edge and Marrowstrike respectively.  My numbers for Marrowstrike were 4,195 dps and my numbers for Edge were 4,167 dps.

If you look at my SEP numbers, STR is worth 1, Agil is worth .7168, ArP is worth .9248, Crit Rating is worth .8674 and 2 AP is worth .8741 for me at my gear level.

If you add up the numbers for each weapon.

Edge of Ruin

  • STR = 121 (121 * 1)
  • ArP = 70 (76 * .9248 rounded)
  • Crit = 54 (62 * .8674 rounded)
  • Total = 245

Marrowstrike

  • AP = 67 (154/2 * .8741 rounded)
  • Agility = 76 (106 * .7168 rounded)
  • ArP = 55 (60 * .9248 rounded)
  • Crit = 49 (57 * .8674 rounded)
  • Total = 247

As you can see, Marrowstrike narrowly edges, Edge of Ruin.  Yes, STR is that good, but when you throw on another dps stat altogether (Agility) it makes things murkier.

As my crit goes up with gear, Edge could turn out to be a better choice due to Crit having being less useful the more you have.   I’ll just have to wait and see.  For now, however, I’m very glad I managed to snag either of these great weapons.

The fact of the matter is, you should take whichever drops first.  If you want to put forth the effort to get Marrowstrike after Edge drops, go for it.  It’s worth about 30 dps (at least for me).  If you want to put in the effort to go after Edge after Marrowstrike drops, go for it.  It’s good for Fury and may be better after my crit gets up a little higher as I gear.

Bottom line, either of these would be a great upgrade over Titansteel Destroyer, Heroics, Naxx10 and non-KT Naxx25 weapons.  For Arms, they are an upgrade over Ironsoul as well, just because Poleaxe spec owns Mace spec.  If you are hit capped, they rock Stormedge too.

So there you have it.  Once Landsoul gets his spreadsheet updated for 3.2, this will be a lot easier to figure out.  I had to go in and custom gear all my 3.2 gear, including the weapons.  Hopefully he’ll get that updated soon and take a lot of the work out of this process.

Randul & Kered…NERFED!

Anyone who reads this blog regularly will undoubtedly know that I am a huge proponent of the dual-spec system.  The dual-spec system allowed me, on my Warrior Randul, to have a tanking spec (Prot) and a pvp/daily spec (Arms).  It also allowed me, on my Death Knight Kered, to have a tanking spec (Unholy) and a DPS spec (Blood).

The good news:  I can perform the roles of tank and dps/pvp on my Warrior and the roles of tank and dps on my Death Knight.

The bad news:  Half of the roles I play on both of my level 80 characters have been nerfed.  Nerfed pretty hard in my opinion.

According to a post on wow.com (formerly WowInsider) the following nerfs will take effect as of the next patch:

Warrior

  • Juggernaut: This talent now also increases the cooldown on Charge by 5 seconds.

Death Knight

  • Frost Presence: Armor bonus is now 60% down from 80%.

What does this mean?  It means Randul the Dwarf will have many more opportunities to be kited by pretty much anyone who can kite.  Not only was the critical strike bonus of Mortal Strike and Slam reduced on Juggernaut in the last patch, but now they are increasing the cooldown of Charge.

How about Kered the Death Knight?  Essentially the only way I’m able to raid (as Tank) is being nerfed pretty hard.  A 20% reduction in the armor bonus in Frost Presence is nothing to sneeze at.

Does this kill my characters?  Nope, not really.  My main spec on Randul is Protection and my preferred spec on Kered is DPS.  Does it hurt my playstyle?  Yes.  I do enjoy pvp, and this is going to make it that much harder to PVP on Randul.  As for Kered, while I prefer to DPS on him, our guild’s lack of tanks forces me to spec as a tank in raids on any character I take.  I sure hope he can still hold his own with a 20% reduction in his armor bonus.

Starting To Get Excited

Patch 3.1 is coming, and with it…dual-specs!

As you should most definitely know, I am a tank.  I love tanking.  I love being that last wall between the life and death of my entire raid.  It’s a lot of fun and a lot of responsibility, but I dig it.

HOWEVER, I also love Arms!  The Arms tree has fascinated me since I knew there was such at thing as multiple trees.  I imagine the concept of the Arms tree goes something like this.  A warrior using his weapon, with which he has trained for years, with utmost precision to damage his foe.  I will make you BLEED, and then capitalize off of your weakness!

So yeah, my dual-specs are going to be Protection and Arms.  I have two thoughts on the subject really.  I will either go full on PVE dps Arms or a PVE/PVP hybrid Arms.

My PVE Arms spec looks a little something like this.  I opted to go mace spec because I happen to have a Titansteel Destroyer already made.  If I could get that axe from Heroic Halls of Lightning I’d go axe spec for sure.  In all honesty, as far as dps goes this is a better Arms weapon since it’s slower, but the stats on the Destroyer are just beautiful.

My PVE/PVP hybrid spec looks like this.  I’m essentially trading Commanding Presence for Improved Hamstring and Second Wind.  I’m also trading 2 points in Improved Execute for a point in Tactical Mastery and Piercing Howl.  The loss in AP from Commanding can be overcome from other buffs so it’s not a huge issue.  The loss of improved execute, while sucky, just can’t be helped.  Second Wind and Improved Hamstring are just too important for pvp.

I’m already sitting with the 1,000 gold in my bank, so it’s just a matter of the patch coming out and I’m ready to roll.  Next time you see Randul the Dwarf, watch out!  I might be a walking fortress, or I might be a spinning ball of death.  You wanna take the chance?
