New Patch = What?

Posted in Uncategorized, World of Warcraft with tags , , , , on October 15, 2010 by Randul the Dwarf

Patch 4.0.1 is out for World of Warcraft and it is…perplexing?  I’m not going to lie folks, this patch has me flustered.  I’ve played MMORPGs for twelve years, and this is the first time a patch or expansion has left me thinking…what the heck am I supposed to do now?

Part of the problem is a lack of addons.  That’s not truly Blizzard’s fault, it’s mine.  However, if the default UI/game could be customized to the way I like it, I wouldn’t need those addons.  It’s not that I can’t perform without grid and bartender, but when I’ve played the game with them for over a year, it’s disconcerting when they disappear.

Another issue I’m having is just the complete re-work of some of the ways classes work.  My DK is a mystery to me at this point.  I’ll adapt sure, but it’s a bit daunting to log onto a character when I know I have to relearn how he works.

Interestingly enough, a couple of my biggest issues stem from things that I’ve only recently truly gotten into again.  PVP.  Prior to patch 4.0.1 I was totally digging PVP.  I would go into the level 19 bracket of Warsong Gulch and have a great time on my baby Frost Mage.  Now…ugh…not so much.  Damage is out of control.  If I don’t see a rogue before he opens up on me, I die.  I was one-shot by a rogue the other day.  Let’s look at that again and measure the fun factor.

Step 1:  I am standing there.

Step 2:  I die.

Call me crazy, but that doesn’t sound like fun.  I’m not scrub in greys either, kids.

Allow me to list my gearz for you: (For time’s sake, I’ll just be listing Stamina since their damage to my health is the issue in question)

  • Thick Bronze Neclace – 3 Stamina
  • Exquisite Sunderseer Mantle – 5 Stamina & 51 Resilience
  • Spidersilk Drape –  4 Stamina
  • Tattered Dreadmist Robe – 10 Stamina + 100 Health enchant
  • Shimmering Bracers of Stamina – 3 Stamina + 1 Stamina enchant
  • Gold-Flecked Gloves – 9 Stamina
  • Jewel Encrusted Sash – 2 Stamina
  • Willow Pants of the Eagle – 3 Stamina
  • Spidersilk Boots – 8 Stamina
  • Heavy Copper Ring – 2 Stamina
  • Lavishly Jeweled Ring – No Stamina
  • Discerning Eye of the Beast x2 – No Stamina
  • Grand Staff of Jordan – 10 Stamina & 68 Resilience
  • Greater Magic Wand – No Stamina

As you can see, I’m not exactly poorly geared.  I have 60 Stamina on my gear.  That’s 600 HP just from the Stamina on my gear.  I’m also rocking 100 Health on my chest.  700 Health before you even factor in my base health.  I was one-shot.  That’s a problem folks, I don’t care what side you fall on, that’s a major issue that needs to be addressed.  If I got one-shot, someone who really is leveling through BGs (instead of just pvping for the fun of it like me) stands absolutely zero chance of lasting more than .5 seconds.

I’d like to see a damage reduction across the board.  They addressed max-level damage by buffing resilience, but how much resilience is there really in the low level BGs?  Not much.  I suppose I could get the BoA trinket for the Stamina on that.  That may be my only option if they don’t fix this situation soon.  Actually, I do have another option.  Make a rogue so I can one-shot people from stealth.  Sounds fun, amirite?

My last issue is something that came as a surprise that is my own fault.  I probably should have got on the Test Realm and checked into things, but I didn’t.  The method I have of attaining BoA items (such as the aforementioned trinket) was to use Stonekeepers Shards or emblems.  I cashed in all my emblems prior to the patch so I could get as many as possible, but I still lacked a few.  I was sitting on 40,000 honor on Kered hoping that would buy me the gun at least.  LOLNO!  My honor was reduced to around 1500, the gun costs 3500.  😦

I’m amazed that 40,000 honor isn’t worth a boa gun.  /sigh

Oh well, what are your thoughts on the patch?

What’s New?

Posted in World of Warcraft with tags , , , , , , , , , on November 10, 2009 by Randul the Dwarf

It’s been too long since I posted.  I’m turning into one of those bloggers who is inconsistent with my posting.  I don’t like that, but the fact of the matter is, I blog from work and work is nuts this time of year.

I did want to give a little bit of an update on what’s going on with me in-game these days.  My guild is farming Trial of the Crusader & Onyxia for mad lewtz, just like everyone else.  There is a very small minority that wants to try Trial of the Grand Crusader, but I really don’t think we are ready for it.  Don’t get me wrong, I want to try it!  I just think we will fail and have some very frustrated people on our hands.

I don’t mind wiping in a raid.  Obviously I like downing bosses and wiping is not as enjoyable, but it doesn’t bother me.  It doesn’t make me mad to wipe on a boss, as long as we are progressing.  There are people in my guild, however, who will stop showing up to raid nights if we wipe too many times.  This is why I am hesitant to go after TotGC, especially without our “progression group”.

With our progression group, I think we’d stand a chance.  We have the dps, the healing & the tanking to get the job done.  Unfortunately, our progression group is MIA right now.  The reasons are good, I’m not blaming them.  New jobs, family issues, etc…it’s just that without our best raiders, we aren’t getting TotGC down anytime soon.

Speaking of our progression group, we’ve stalled out on Yogg-Saron in Ulduar.  Not because we can’t beat him, but because we can’t get the people online to even try.  It’s frustrating, but it’s something we need to deal with.

On the pvp front, my gear is coming along nicely.  My 2v2 partner and I passed the 1350 hurdle that had been haunting us for a while, and finally got our relentless boots.  We took a small step back this past week and didn’t do so hot, but everyone has their good weeks and bad.  We’ll bounce back and get over 1400 soon.

My current gear setup is as follows:

  • Set Pieces:  4/5 Furious, with the Deadly Helm
  • Cape & Neck:  Furious
  • Bracers, Belt & Boots: Relentless
  • Rings:  Deadly & Wintergrasp
  • Trinkets: Resilience/AP on use & AP/”pvp trinket” on use.
  • Ranged:  Some stupid gun from Ulduar

It’s not bad, I should get my Furious helmet next week.  Hopefully we’ll be getting an 3v3 team going to get a few more points each week.

The last thing I’ve been doing lately is leveling my wife’s Hunter Frona.  As of right now she’s about 1 bubble into 79.  I think my wife is going to start playing her now so she can get reacquainted before she starts running heroics & raids at 80.

It’s been alright, but I don’t think I’m going to level my hunter now.  Beastmaster is undoubtedly the most efficient way to level a hunter, but it’s also pretty boring.  Serpent Sting, Arcane, Steady, Steady does not a fun rotation make.  Sure, I’ve got some cooldowns in there, but they aren’t that exciting either.

I think the next character I level will be the Shaman.  I’ve got him to 35, only 5 levels till an epic mount & dual wield.  Yeah, he’s definitely next.

That’s what I’ve been into lately.  Hopefully I’ll have some interesting things to write about soon, rather than just an update post every now and then.

Who am I? Part 1

I was thinking about what I wanted to write about today, as my goal is to put a post out every weekday.  I honestly couldn’t think of anything of value to write, so I decided to pass for the day.  Then, as I was reading a forum I frequent, a topic hit me.  As a WOW player, who am I and how did I get here?  This is part 1 in a 2 part series.

The Upgrade that Wasn’t

Posted in Gear with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 18, 2009 by Randul the Dwarf

When is an upgrade not an upgrade?  When everyone you are competing against gets the exact same upgrade as you.

Imagine if you will, you try and try and try and TRY AND TRY to get an upgrade over your pvp weapon, the Titansteel Destroyer.  The vast majority of people you are pvping against seem to either have the Titansteel Destroyer or the Colossal Skull-Clad Cleaver.  You run Ulduar every week hoping Ironsoul or Stormedge will drop.  All of the 2-handed dps in your runs have gotten their upgrades, the only thing standing between you and a massive weapon upgrade is the stupid thing dropping.

Then, the unthinkable happens.  3.2 comes out.  Weapons of the exact same quality (in fact they are better) are dropping in a 5-man Heroic!  Why slam your face against Ulduar droprates when you can just run Heroic Trial of the Champions every day and hope it drops there!

Finally, you get that upgrade you’ve been looking for!  You are ready to go out there and face the world with your awesome new weapon.  You go into Arena and what happens?  Everyone and their stinking brother has done the exact same thing as you.

This is my story.  I’ve tried for months to get my hands on an upgrade to the Titansteel Destroyer so I could go out there and rock the competition.  I’ve run Ulduar, Naxx25 and even a few Naxx10’s in hopes of Death’s Bite dropping.  My luck has been, abysmal.

Finally a shortcut.  Heroic TotC.  So I run it for a week and finally Marrowstrike drops.  I’m happy!  I’m thrilled!  I’m deceived.

Make no mistake about it, Marrowstrike & Edge of Ruin are Titansteel Destroyer 2.0.  These weapons aren’t upgrades if everyone else is using the same weapon!  Sure, if I still had Titansteel Destroyer it would be even worse, but upgrading to Marrowstrike has taken me to the exact same level I was before!  Right next to everyone else!

Now what?  Now I have to find the next upgrade.  Unfortunately the next upgrade is just not very accessible to me.  Taking a look at Rawr, I can see the following weapons would be upgrades for me.

(Listed in reverse order from smallest upgrade to largest)

  • Hoperender – This is attainable for me, but it’s not really an upgrade.  It’s a sidegrade or a downgrade if anything.  Drops off of 10-man General Vezax.
  • Betrayer of Humanity – 25-Man Kel’Thuzad.  Easy enough to get KT down, but there are always 409817984174098 2-handed DPSers gunning for this weapon.  Plus it’s not a huge upgrade, as it only has 19 more top-end damage.  If it falls into my lap, sure, but I’m not sure about actively seeking it out.
  • Lotrafen, Spear of the Damned – Drops off of 25-man General Vezax.  Probably not going to see this weapon anytime soon.
  • Fordragon Blades – Drops off of 10-man Anub’Arak in Trial of the Crusader.  I believe this will be attainable by my guild, but we have to wait for Anub’Arak to be available for killing.  That means a month at least, probably longer.
  • Any 1850 Furious Gladiator Weapon – This MIGHT actually be one of my best bets, as I’ll be doing arena and hopefully gaining rating anyway.  A long uphill climb, but if I ever hit 1850 I will pick up one of these fine weapons.  This is also a huge 114 top-end damage increase oveor Marrowstrike.
  • Voldrethar, Dark Blade of Oblivion – 25-man Ulduar Hard Mode General Vezax.  Um, not likely.
  • Archon Glaive – 25-man Anub’Arak.  Probably not going to see this.

So there you have it.  The only true upgrades I see for myself are Betrayer of Humanity, Fordragon Blades & Furious Gladiator weapons.  Ugh.

Patch 3.2 Thus Far

Posted in World of Warcraft with tags , , , , , , , , , , on August 5, 2009 by Randul the Dwarf

Well, so far, I don’t have a lot to say.  I logged in last night ready to be killed immediately.  You see, I had apparently logged out in Wintergrasp Fortress and I figured with my luck it would be Horde owned and operated.

To my surprise and delight, not only was it not Horde territory, but it was also in the middle of a battle.  I had completely forgotten about the queueing system, so I was a little surprised when a little window popped up and asked me if I wanted to join the battle.

Of course I clicked yes, as I still have a few Marks to go before I complete my pvp set, or at least that’s what I thought at the time.

As soon as I teleport out into the courtyard I see quests so I rush around to pick them up.  Southern Sabotage (sucks), Victory in Wintergrasp (yay!), No Mercy for the Merciless (yay!) and Stop the Siege (yay!).  The three latter quests are pretty easy and we were obviously going to win, so I was pretty happy.

A couple minutes later, I had hit my First Leutinant rank and we had won the battle.  No Mercy for the Merciless?  Complete!  Stop the Siege?  Complete!  Victory in Wintergrasp….well?…Incomplete!  What?!?!  I also saw some people in General chat saying they hadn’t gotten marks.  I checked and, sure enough, no marks.

Eh, chalk it up to Patch Day, but it’s still annoying.

After I turned in my quests I went to look at the vendor, thinking there might be something new on there.  Yep, new pants and something else that I can’t remember or find on wowhead.  These items are a little odd to me.  They have a higher item level, but lack crit in favor of hit.  I don’t really need anymore Hit on my pvp gear so I’ll probably be passing.

So I depart from Wintergrasp and head to Dalaran.  I want to see what, if any changes have been made to the Arena vendors.  There it is!  Deadly Gladiator set pieces have had their arena requirements reduced!  Good and bad, in my opinion.  I had nearly reached the point where I could buy them anyway, but now I can go ahead and get them and work toward the Furious stuff.

I would have been able to buy a new piece, but I’m not stupid.  I don’t buy things on Patch Day.

Things I’m looking forward to

I’m really itching to get into the new 5-man instance.  While I don’t necessarily agree with the idea of a 5-man giving better loot than a raid, I’m not going to ignore it either.  It turns out that the REGULAR 5-man has a VERY good tanking trinket, The Black Heart.

I will also be running the Heroic version for Edge of Ruin.  Finally, a farmable upgrade to the Crapsteel Destroyer.  I’ll still be looking to get my hands on Ironsoul or Stormedge, but this will definitely be a nice appetizer.

I’m also looking forward to the free respec on my DK.  Right now he’s running Unholy PVE DPS & Unholy PVP.  I’d like to mix it up a bit.  Maybe go Frost DW DPS and Unholy PVP.  Lots of decisions to make.

So there you have it, folks.  My, very incomplete, thoughts on the new patch.  Hopefully I’ll be able to dive in a little more thoroughly tonight and tomorrow and come back on Friday with a more in-depth commentary.

Going down with the ship

Posted in Player vs Player, World of Warcraft with tags , , , , , on July 30, 2009 by Randul the Dwarf

Going down with the ship is supposed to be the Captain’s job, and maybe that’s why I do it.  I consider myself a Captain when I’m in a battleground.  I’m not the most well geared, but I typically have an idea what strategy will work best and I play to win.

What is going down with the ship?  The best example I can think of is when solo-defending a node in Arathi Basin and a group of Horde (or Alliance if you are a bad guy) come to take it from you.

You have two choices at this point.  Run and live.  Stay and die.  My inspiration for this post is a Death Knight who was guarding the Farm the other day.  I was at the Lumber Mill, so I saw the whole scenario unfold.  (On a side note, I’m the one who called the incoming…not him)  He was all by himself and saw about 4 Horde coming at him.  What did he do?

He ran away.  He lived and didn’t suffer the stinging indignity of defeat.  Or did he?  We lost the Farm in fairly short order and it was essentially his fault.  Sure, we might have lost the farm anyway, but could he have held out until reinforcements arrived?  Could he have lived just long enough for someone else to come and occupy the horde until even MORE reinforcements arrived?

That’s what I was planning.  He was going to die.  There is no doubt in my mind.  I couldn’t have reached the farm quick enough to do anything other than interupt their attempt at capping that node.  That’s the point though isn’t it?  If he held them off long enough for me to get there, and then I held them off long enough for someone else to get there, we are still accumulating resources for holding that node.

That’s why I’ll ALWAYS go down with the ship.  I may not get as many kills or do as much damage or have the glory job, but people like me create wins in BGs.  We are the unsung heroes.  We defend.

When one lonely horde comes after me, I defend.  Sometimes I win, sometimes I die, but I die defending.  When two horde come after me, I defend.  When 10 Horde come after me, I defend.  On the occasions where I face overwhelming odds, but defend long enough for my reinforcements arrive and save the day?  The victory is oh so sweet.

So to all of you out there who play in BGs, I have this to say.  Defend the nodes.  Call out when enemies are incoming, and go down with the ship.  If you run, the enemy accomplishes their goal that much faster.

The quest for a new 2-hander

Posted in Player vs Player, Raiding, Warrior, World of Warcraft with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on July 29, 2009 by Randul the Dwarf

I’ve been splitting my time about 25/75 in WOW lately.  25% of the time, I raid.  The other 75% of the time, I pvp.  I’ve got what I consider a pretty solid starter set going.  I’m 5-piece Hateful gear, Deadly neck, cape, wrists & boots and Wintergrasp belt and trinket.

The only PVP upgrades I’m missing at this point are rings, one trinket and my weapons.  I say weapons half-heartedly because when I say weapons, I mean my ranged weapon.  Sure, I’d pick up an Arena weapon if I managed to get my rating that high, but for now I’m just itching to get my hands on an Ulduar weapon.

Fortunately, my guild is currently downing three bosses in Ulduar who drop 2-handed weapons for me, two of which are on “farm status”.

Ignis drops Relentless Edge.  Relentless Edge is a polearm, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but it lacks the STR of other weapons in favor of pure attack power.  This wouldn’t really matter to me in Arena, as I don’t have a pally partner to give me kings.  This thing comes with a crapton of crit, but the speed is a little fast and the topend damage isn’t nearly as high as others.  Still, this is a solid upgrade over the Destroyer.  This weapon would probably be my last choice of upgrades, if I got to choose.

Flame Leviathan drops Ironsoul.  Ironsoul is the easiest Ulduar weapon to get because you have to get by Flame Leviathan just to have a chance at any of the others.  Ironsoul is also a very solid upgrade to my Titansteel Destroyer, packing Armor Pen and a whopping 131 more topend damage.  It loses some AP from Strength, but it has more Stamina and CRIT, which the Destroyer sorely lacks.    Ironsoul would be my second choice of Ulduar upgrades.

Hodir drops Stormedge.  This would probably be my first choice of upgrades.  For PVP, it’s probably not QUITE as good as Ironsoul, but I’m really itching to switch to Axe spec and get that 5% crit chance & damage.  With Axe spec, this thing moves ahead, as the 5% crit would definitely be more than the crit from Ironsoul.  It’s got STR, Stam, Armor Pen & hit.  Hit is usually not the most heavily weighted stat in PVP, but the fact is I’m a little under the 5% hit cap on Randul, so it can’t hurt.

The good news is, I have access to these weapons.  The not so great news is that I’m second in line to pick them up.  (Third if you count hunters for the polearm)  A guildmate is still using the Collosal Skull-Clad Cleaver and DPS is his main raiding spec, so he’ll get dibs over me.

HOWEVER, once one of these drops for him, I’ll be swooping in and getting the tools to take my Arena team to a new level.  Speaking of my arena team, my partner & I went 9 – 1 last night and broke 1,000 rating.  We stopped while we were still fresh, but we weren’t showing any signs of slowing down.  The one loss we had was truly a fluke.  A hunter disengaged, I charged to get the killing blow and he just happened to disengage on top of the pillar in the Orgrimmar Arena as it was going up.  There’s no possible way he planned that.  RNG strikes and kills.

On a side note, as I said above, DG has killed Hodir.  Thanks for playing, please come again.
